Designlines has been a longtime supporter of the Toronto design scene, showcasing its amazing people, places and products for 18 years and counting. Now we’re giving kudos to all this talent with a special celebration during the DesignTO festival. It’s a great opportunity to meet, mix and mingle – come party as we crown our 2020 winners!

Designer of the Year Celebration

The 2020 celebration will be held on Friday, January 24, from 6pm to 9:30pm at MoCA, Toronto’s latest destination for cutting-edge local and international art. Tour the main floor, sip and snack and join the live coronation of the designates of Best Public Space, Best Restaurant Design, Best Product Design, and of course, Designer of the Year – 2020’s most awesome residential interior design specialist. Okay, but it clearly is

For the first 16 years of my life, the bat cave at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)—a reconstruction of an actual cave in Jamaica—was among my favourite places in the city. The cave was decorated with cast stalactites and wax bat models, which hung from the ceiling and threw jagged shadows on the walls. A few other features imbued it with spooky verisimilitude: the drip-drip-drip sound effects, the mirrors arranged to create the illusion of infinite depth, the strobe lights strategically placed to make the shadows flutter. When I visited as a five-year-old, the bat cave scared me. When I visited as a stoned fifteen-year-old, it scared me even more. Then came the renovation.
