The local furniture brand teamed up with artist Tamara Al-Issa for its first collaborative product line

In partnership with Tamara “Solem” Al-Issa, the artist behind Solem Ceramics, Silk & Snow has launched a limited edition capsule distinguished by its cream and black palette. Co-designed by Silk & Snow and Al-Issa, the capsule features two hand-made vases crafted from 100% natural clay and marries the brand’s Japandi-esque sensibilities with the artist’s signature forms.

Al-Issa is a Syrian/Filipina Toronto-based sculptural artist whose work pulls from the architecture and cultural practices within Asia and North Africa. Al-Issa achieves her sculptural forms by exploring familiar shapes, colours and textures from these regions in which she finds comfort.

The collaboration began when Solem Ceramics reached out to Silk & Snow, expressing her appreciation for the brand, its visual aesthetic and emphasis on organic materials.

The team behind Silk & Snow loved Solem Ceramics’ artistry and sculptural sensibilities and felt that she would succeed in making pieces that felt native to the brand’s identity but through a fresh lens.

Solem Ceramics’ signature works are typically glazed in cobalt blue. For this collaboration, the team chose to stick with Silk & Snow’s cream and black aesthetic, sourcing recycled clay that naturally match the Pantones. The design team and Solem Ceramics worked through a few iterations of vases, focusing on finding designs that felt natural to the bedroom and complemented the existing product line—settling on the two designs as they work in a pair, but are also striking on their own.

This collaboration marks an exciting milestone for both Silk & Snow and Tamara Al-Issa, blending their distinct aesthetics into a cohesive and captivating collection. The limited edition capsule not only highlights Al-Issa’s artistic versatility but also underscores Silk & Snow’s commitment to innovative design and sustainable practices sourced within the Toronto design scene. The vase capsule collection is available now, while supplies last.

Okay, but it clearly is

For the first 16 years of my life, the bat cave at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)—a reconstruction of an actual cave in Jamaica—was among my favourite places in the city. The cave was decorated with cast stalactites and wax bat models, which hung from the ceiling and threw jagged shadows on the walls. A few other features imbued it with spooky verisimilitude: the drip-drip-drip sound effects, the mirrors arranged to create the illusion of infinite depth, the strobe lights strategically placed to make the shadows flutter. When I visited as a five-year-old, the bat cave scared me. When I visited as a stoned fifteen-year-old, it scared me even more. Then came the renovation.
