Catch and Release Incense Burner
Designer Simone Ferkul collaborates with Mark Krebs to craft an incense burner that transforms the ordinary into an evolving sculpture of scent, memory and time
Toronto-based designer Simone Ferkul encourages us to embrace imperfection with her latest collaboration, the Catch and Release incense burner, created in partnership with Canadian design studio Mark Krebs. Originally created for the 2018 DesignTO exhibition Outside the Box, the incense burner has now been reimagined through this new partnership. Together, theyāve crafted a piece that evolves over time, mirroring the personal journey of its owner.
Ferkulās collaboration with Krebs (an artisan best known for his work in rug design) emerged after a conversation with Davin Cowper of the studio in 2023. āDavinās passion for craftsmanship and production made him the perfect partner to bring this cherished design to life,ā says Ferkul. The design process was one of refinement and precision, with numerous prototypes helping to perfect the details of the burner. From adjusting the proportions to incorporating a cone in the base, every element was carefully considered.
What sets the Catch and Release incense burner apart is its unfinished brass finish, which develops a natural patina over time. āUnlike coated finishes, the natural patina that develops reflects the personal journey of each owner, making every piece truly unique,ā Ferkul explains. This evolving aesthetic celebrates the beauty of imperfection, turning a simple incense burner into a narrative object that transforms with use.
Available through Mark Krebs, the Catch and Release incense burner offers more than a sensory experienceāit tells a story through its ever-changing materiality.
