Landscape Cabinet

A free-standing cabinet that evokes the raw beauty of Canadian landscapes

Reminiscent of the grooved texture of old wood grain—or even a beaver’s teeth marks—this elegant cabinet with a stained glass insert has a distinctly Canadian feel. Realized in 2023 for local interior design studio Denizens of Design, the custom design, dubbed the Landscape Cabinet, is the brainchild of creative furniture studio Hamilton Holmes.

“I designed the glass to exhibit the Ontario landscape that I love so much—rushing water, rolling hills and blue skies,” shares lead designer Nicholas Hamilton Holmes.

Strong and sturdy, the free-standing cabinet with a solid white oak body offers a monolithic presence. But the stained glass insert that sits on top—the “cabinet within a cabinet”—is the true star of the show.

“I’ve been wanting to work with stained glass for a long time. It’s an outdated material, and that makes it a perfect candidate for reinvention. When Denizens of Design asked us to make an extra special cabinet for their client, I immediately suggested stained glass.”

Drawing from four natural elements—water, land, sky and sun—the reflective and translucent stained glass cabinet shines in brilliant shades of blue and green. And with clear sightlines, contents become visible, softening the effect of the impenetrable body cabinet (LED interior lighting is also available).

“The main case was meant to look like a huge block—like a block of stone—and texturing the entire surface brought the experience to the next level. The case parts are textured, the doors are textured, and even the leg system is fully textured. 100% coverage. This process took over 100 hours.”
