If the condition of your bed has you tossing and turning, it could be time for a new one. Stop losing sleep – we’ll show you the stores in Toronto where best to shop for the bed of your dreams

Too short, too skinny, little support, just plain ugly. These are but a few of the common complaints about beds. So, why do we put up with it? Because shopping for one is hardly fun and not exactly easy. And hey, we sequester them behind closed doors anyway. But the look of your bedroom revolves around this key piece of furniture, so treat it like a sanctuary of sleep with a contemporary bed that makes you feel as comfortable as it does stylish. And leave the shopping to us; we’ve got you covered. Here are 10 stores in Toronto where you’re sure to find the modern bed of your dreams in the GTA:

Modern bed frame from BoConcept one of the best bed stores in Toronto

BoConcept

As you might expect from Denmark’s largest furniture manufacturer, BoConcept has a plethora of bed frames on offer, at various price points and with countless opportunities to customize. All sport simple Nordic design, while some offer storage, too. Our fave, the Austin bed (above), features matte lacquer structure and a cocoon-like headboard, which we love in bouclé fabric. Metal bed frame from CB2 with black and white palette for the linens, best bed stores to buy a bed in Toronto

CB2 & Crate & Barrel

Together these sister stores have more bed options than you can shake a stick at. CB2 suits the trend-aware urbanite; Crate & Barrel’s offerings are often more classically styled (and more expensive). Between the two you’ll find headboards in wood, fabric, leather and metal (like CB2’s Niander, above). There are also platform and four poster beds, and beds with built-in nightstands and storage. Wood bed frame available at EQ3 in Toronto

EQ3

What’s to like about EQ3? Well, the Winnipeg-based manufacturer boasts a solid curation of contemporary brands as well as its own modernly-appointed, made-in-Canada furnishings that, as the price tag reflects, are built to last. Just look at the all-wood-construction of the beds, which feature finger-jointed Douglas fir as well as reclaimed teak finished with an eco-friendly solution (shown above). Also here: upholstered and storage beds. Read the store listing here.

Modern bed from Hollace Cluny

Hollace Cluny

In the business for over 20 years, Hollace Cluny’s selection of international brands and manufacturers is rivalled by few and trusted by all to be sophisticated, artisanally-crafted and imagined by some of world’s greatest designers. The price tag reflects this but what you get in return is an exceptional, heirloom piece. Case in point the Tigris bed by Skram (above) which features solid timber construction and mortise-and-tenon joinery. Read the store listing here.

Soft fabric headboard for this bed frame available in Toronto at Home Société

Home Société

This mega-showroom up at Castlefield and Caledonia is a shrine to French design. It is here, under one roof, that you will find contemporary furniture from such luxury brands as Flou and Ligne Roset, which produce gorgeous iconic pieces by such world-class designers as Carlo Colombo and Inga Sempé (see her Ruché bed). Also here is Quebec-based MUST, whose condo-appropriate pieces are reasonably priced – we’re particularly fond of their Magie bed with quilted headboard (pictured). Read the store listing here.

Modern minimalistic bed frame from Italinteriors, one of the best stores to buy a bed in Toronto

Italinteriors

Located at the heart of the King East Design District, Italinteriors flaunts some of the most incredible Italian design available in the city. With Porro, Cassina, Living Divani and many more all under one roof, the selection of exquisite – and often award-winning – furniture is pretty unreal. Our favourite beds, available at the store, are those with undeniable presence: lush upholstery in unique colours and fabrics, statement-making headboards and surprise integrated functionality, such as storage (see Estel’s Ayrton above). Pink bed frame from Mobilia, an affordable shop to buy a bed in Toronto, best stores

Mobilia

If hiking out to Mississauga is cool with you, there is a reward in store. Mobilia is a multi-level showroom chockablock with contemporary furniture for the whole home. Some of it looks familiar – yes, odes to design icons abound. Past that there is Canadian-made and quality imported staples that surprise in terms of style, comfort and price. In the bed category there are models to suit every sensibility, including this ’60s-esque Sareen number with tufted headboard. Read the store listing here.

Minimalistic bed frame from Palazzetti, one of the bed stores in Toronto

Palazzetti

Just north of the Castlefield and Caledonia Design District is Palazzetti, a multi-level showroom dedicated to slick Italian design by the likes of Bonaldo, Midj, Bontempi and Casamania & Horm. If you feel eyes on the back of your head, that would be the massive collection of Fornasetti the shop boasts. In the bed department, we love the diversity of silhouettes which range from overstuffed and floor-resting to barely-there profiles propped up on minimalist legs. Read the store listing here.

Modern bedroom with furniture from Italian manufacture Poliform

Poliform

Coordinated, super smart and forever cool – Italian import Poliform has the whole home in mind when it designs its furnishings. There is nothing in this King East showroom that you won’t drop your jaw at – if the sophisticated, streamlined looks don’t get you, the functionality will. And the beds here are no different. What a presence these investment pieces have with their sculptural profiles often crafted from timber and richly upholstered (see Kelly, above). Read the store listing here.

Bedroom from Selene Furniture

Selene Furniture

Just a 30-minute drive north of the city gets you to this very special place in Vaughan – the city’s largest showroom dedicated to modern Italian furniture. The selection and the experience of shopping there is unique: there are products imported from the motherland and products made right there, in the onsite manufacturing facility (using Italian leather, of course). For our money, we love Presotto’s beds best, including Plana with its barely visible stand. Read the store listing here.

Okay, but it clearly is

For the first 16 years of my life, the bat cave at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)—a reconstruction of an actual cave in Jamaica—was among my favourite places in the city. The cave was decorated with cast stalactites and wax bat models, which hung from the ceiling and threw jagged shadows on the walls. A few other features imbued it with spooky verisimilitude: the drip-drip-drip sound effects, the mirrors arranged to create the illusion of infinite depth, the strobe lights strategically placed to make the shadows flutter. When I visited as a five-year-old, the bat cave scared me. When I visited as a stoned fifteen-year-old, it scared me even more. Then came the renovation.
